Meeting the needs of every student in every class is difficult enough in school – much less, online at home. That said, schools must have distance-learning options available in case the pandemic returns in the fall, which means planning for the 2020-21 school year is at a critical stage.

Educators have long used online tools in the classroom; but that is not the same as teaching and learning in a virtual environment. Few teachers are also “IT people” and even teenagers are not always as “techy” as they seem.

When Oklahoma students left for Spring Break, any chance of not returning to finish the school year seemed unlikely. Social distancing and quarantine are now important public health recommendations in response to COVID-19, factors that have already impacted our state’s students by prompting a shutdown period.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Oklahoma State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister has proposed that Oklahoma school buildings remain closed for the remainder of the semester.

However, classes are expected to continue in a virtual environment as districts will need to implement a distance learning plan.
