A Plus Schools: Is Your Child’s School Making the Grade?

A Plus Schools Make the Grade

Parents Should Ask Questions Amidst Fiscal Uncertainty

There’s no question that Oklahoma schools are going through tough fiscal times.

Governor Stitt has announced a willingness to look for additional funding sources for schools, and that’s certainly needed.

These budgetary challenges require schools to find every available efficiency, and to cut things that don’t work.

But even as school districts try to find ways to do more with less money, student success should not suffer.

Here are three questions every parent should ask when it comes to student success at their child’s school:

  1. What is the school’s state report card grade?

State school report card grades are posted on the Oklahoma Department of Education’s website at .  Simply find your school, and you’ll be able to see the letter grade achieved for each subject and grade level. If you’re happy with  your school’s grade, your work here is done! If not  …

  1. What is the school administration’s plan to help the school improve?

In this life, three things are certain: death, taxes and state testing. Tests happen every spring. A school that failed last year won’t do better next time if they don’t change what they’re doing in the classroom.  Ask for the school’s game plan.

  1. Is the school’s daily curriculum aligned to Common Core (sometimes referred to as national standards) – or to Oklahoma standards?

We know that 80 percent of students can pass a test if they are taught what is being measured. Unfortunately, many school districts in Oklahoma continue to utilize curriculum that’s aligned to Common Core.

Alpha Plus curriculum is written by Oklahoma teachers, for Oklahoma students, to Oklahoma Academic Standards. That’s why our schools have beaten the state average every  year  for the  state school report cards. Curriculum matters. Common Core doesn’t work.

Finally, it’s important to note that Education Next has ranked Oklahoma’s Academic Standards among the nation’s best. If our classrooms are focused on those standards, our students will succeed. However, if classrooms continue to utilize Common Core as provided by national curriculum companies, our  students will continue to be at a disadvantage.  These national providers are  more expensive and have been shown to be less effective. Oklahoma schools can’t afford to use them anymore.
