Eighty-three schools receive awards for success with the
Oklahoma Academic Standards (OAS) in 2023

OKLAHOMA CITY - “Success with OAS Awards,” recognizing educators and students for their work in teaching and learning the Oklahoma Academic Standards (OAS) this school year, were sent to principals statewide Friday, April 27. Among the awards are 74 Model Teachers for 2023 who were selected based on current school-year data from Alpha Plus Online.
“Every April, our team analyzes assessment data for schools where educators use Alpha Plus tools with fidelity to improve instruction in reading, math and science,” CEO Jan Barrick explained. “While we celebrate Alpha Plus Partner Schools’ success every chance we get, this is not a popularity contest. These awards are based on student performance this school year and nothing else.”
Educators and students at 83 schools qualified for this year’s awards from among 116 schools in 99 districts statewide. More than 21,075 students completed Alpha Plus Online interim assessments this school year. While Alpha Plus’s primary focus is on state-tested grades (3-8), the Oklahoma City school-improvement firm is now also honoring top first- and second-grade and science classes this year.
“Our data allows school teams to monitor – in real time – student, class and school progress toward learning the subject matter required by the state,” Barrick said. “For these awards, we evaluate formative and summative data to identify the best results in terms of instructional pace and student proficiency.”
Awards announced today:
- 2023 MODEL TEACHER awards are for educators who led classes qualifying for both “Goals Met” and “Benchmark” awards for student proficiency by utilizing the Alpha Plus Model of School Improvement. Seventy-four teachers from among 945 educators using Alpha Plus interim assessments were named Alpha Plus Model Teachers for 2022-23. Only 48 teachers qualified for this award in 2021-22. - OAS GOALS MET! AWARDS go to each class completing instruction and short formative quizzes on all OAS Objectives by mid-April with at least 70 percent of students proficient. Just 269 classes (among 1,727 Grade 3-8 reading and math classes using formative assessments statewide) met this Alpha Plus Model goal. This is fifteen more classes than were identified in 2021-22. - OAS BENCHMARK AWARDS go to each class with more than 50 percent of students proficient on the spring summative in reading or math. There were 338 classes in 116 schools that achieved high benchmark proficiency this spring compared to just 135 classes last school year. Only the 226 classes that were not also identified for a Goals Met! Award received OAS Benchmark Awards. OAS BENCHMARK - Class Proficiency Awards
- OAS GREATEST GROWTH AWARDS go to classes in each Alpha Plus Partner School with the most growth from fall 2022 to spring 2023 on assessments aligned to the state tests in reading, math, and science. OAS Greatest Growth Awards are going to 207 classes that qualified for the award by completing the fall/baseline and the spring summative assessments to achieve a true-growth average. “Alpha Plus Model Teachers are the best of the best, yet we feel privileged to work with more than 1,200 educators and administrators statewide to improve their schools,” Barrick said. “We thank all the great teachers who live and work in communities across our state. We are pleased to recognize these educators for going the extra mile for their students.”
OAS Benchmark Awards reflect the Alpha Plus goal of 50 percent of students proficient on state tests because that is the state of Oklahoma’s goal for 2032. If this goal were achieved, Oklahoma could move into the top ten in education nationally. Yet, in 2019 (pre-pandemic), an average of just 33 percent of all Oklahoma students in Grades 3-8 were proficient in reading or math compared to 44 percent of students in schools using Alpha Plus tools.
Alpha Plus provides OAS-aligned curriculum, assessments and resources used in data-driven professional development. Founded in 1990 by an Oklahoma educator, Alpha Plus tools are written by Oklahoma teachers and used only in Oklahoma schools.
